Longhorns Finish Off Season With Nail-biter

January 21st 2008

Sunday 21st Feb – It was the turn of the Derby Braves to visit The Ranch to face the Leicester Longhorns in the final game of the season. Postponed from before Christmas, the much awaited game came at a time when both teams were eager for a win to finish the year off.

An overcast day saw a tough game ground out between two sides ready for a physical battle. Derby, relying on some powerful running from their QB to pound the rock, scored first with a TD run in the Third Quarter, but could not convert. A fumbled snap then let to a safety further into the 3rd to give Derby an 8-0 lead going into the final period.

The Longhorns really sucked it up and started to take control of the game. Driving down the field with determination and direction, Running Back John Ashmore was able to slam it in from a few yards out. A successful 2-point conversion from Piers Hampson tied the scores – which is how things stayed to the end of regulation – despite Leicester getting several attempts at a final play, due to several Derby penalties.

Into overtime, and Derby won the toss. Electing to go first, they were able to score, on an audacious Guard Reverse. The two-point conversion was no good. Not to be deterred, the Longhorns resumed their command of the game, moving the ball closer to the goal line, on the ground and through the air. The drive was finished off by a QB boot from Arron Smith. The two-point conversion pass was just beyond the grasp of Piers Hampson.

Into a second period of overtime, and the Leicester defence, which had performed well all day, stood up one final time – stopping the Braves well short of the endzone. Cometh the hour, cometh the men – the Ashmore men. Smash Ashmore broke away a big run down the middle, which set up the decisive score, from brother and retiring senior John. A true battle finished with a 4 yard dive, off the block of Piers Hampson and the warriors of the offensive line.

Leicester 20, Derby 10. Double Overtime.
